VE-DAY 80TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIONS

VE Day Events - 8th May 2025


The Parish Council worked on a programme of events to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day,
which culminated in lighting the beacon at Adversane Green on Thursday 8th May 2025 as part of the national chain of beacons.


8th May - Wreath Laying

 

Members of the public and representatives from Billingshurst Royal British Legion Branch joined other local groups, schools, churches and the chairman of Billingshurst Parish Council at the village war memorial, to lay wreaths commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which marked the end of the second World War in Europe.

  

8th May - Commemorative Afternoon Tea


 

 

  

 

 


Nearly sixty people enjoyed a fabulous afternoon tea at the Billingshurst Centre in the afternoon of the 8th May, followed by superb entertainment from local crooner and Royal British Legion Chairman, Rob Nicholl.

 

  


8th May - Bell Ringing

St Mary's Church rang the church bells to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE-Day, between 3-4pm on the 8th May.  

8th May - Beacon Lighting - Adversane Green


                         The day's events came to an end at the Beacon lighting on Adversane Green.  Local residents watched newly elected Parish Council Chairman Cllr Paul Berry, light the beacon at 9.30pm as part of the national chain.  The Royal British Legion had a stall, along with the Sussex Police Rural Crime Team.  Piper Rhona McGurk provided suitable accompaniment and some owners of vintage military vehicles popped by.
